The Strophariaceae is a large family in the Agaricales with red brown to purple brown spore prints. The family consists of 18 genera with many commonly encountered species.

Members are saprotrophic (feeding on decaying matter), from leaf litter (
Stropharia) to decaying wood (Pholiota).

The cap is generally with a cutis made up of narrow hyphae, whilst the spores are smooth with an apical germ pore.

A few members of
Psilocybe contain psilocybe and psilocybin both of which are known to be hallucinogenic (magic mushrooms).
