Mantis religiosa (Linnaeus, 1758)
Mantidae
The Praying Mantis (Mantis religiosa) is a large insect, which although common is difficult to see because of its static nature and camouflage. It is an excellent predator and hunts its prey by folding its front legs, as in prayer (hence its name) whilst waiting for a suitable prey (usually a large insect, although they are known to prey on other animals such as frogs and lizards) to come close whereupon it attacks its potential meal with its toothed forelegs and starts feeding immediately (not waiting for a kill) on its catch.
