The common fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) is a small fly generally found near decomposing or fermenting fruits. The sexes are easily differentiated by the presence of a black patch on the lower abdominal area in the males. There are several Drosophila species present in the Maltese Islands and many are difficult to separate from each other.
