Antalis vulgaris (da Costa, 1778)
L - 24mm
The common tusk shell (Antalis vulgaris) is a small scaphopod mollusc present around the Maltese Islands. It is generally found offshore living in soft sediment. The mollusc lives inside the shell, which is open at both ends. The lower (wider) part of the shell is where the foot is and this is usually buried in the muddy substrate. The upper (narrow) part is above the surface and is used for water exchange (waste elimination and respiration). This species is not common.
