The Death's head hawk moth (Acherontia atropos) is the largest moth found in the Maltese Islands, although nowadays is very rare to find. Its larva (caterpillar) is also the largest caterpillar found in the Maltese Islands and is characterised by a series of diagonal lines on the sides and a distinct yellow horn like structure at the posterior end.
